About Geneva
Geneva is Switzerland’s most international city. Resting between the Alpine peaks and the hilly terrain of the Jura, the French-speaking city of Geneva lies in the bay where the Rhone River leaves Lake Geneva.
Historically, Geneva has been a city open to ideologies, innovation and creativity. Men like John Calvin, the reformer, and Henry Dunant, the founder of the Red Cross, were forerunners of the transformed individuals who lives reach well beyond Geneva as literal world changers.
Today, Geneva is a worldwide center for diplomacy and global cooperation. The United Nations Office at Geneva is the most active center for multilateral diplomacy in the world and has been the setting of many historic negotiations and significant decisions affecting nations.
A truly international city, Geneva is home to not only the United Nations and the International Red Cross, but also to 15 major UN agencies, 229 diplomatic missions, 25 inter-governmental organizations, and 250 non-governmental Organizations. These organizations are active in humanitarian aid, trade, human rights, the environment, sustainable development, training and education, peace-keeping, meteorology, intellectual property, nuclear research, health, telecommunications and labor.
As a place of power and influence Geneva is home to 569 multinational corporations and is a popular center for trade fairs and exhibitions. The diverse international (non-Swiss) community accounts for 40% of Geneva's population, represents 185 countries, and speaks 200 languages.
